This weekend was my long run, 12 miles. I have to admit I was a little scared about this one. However, I put my big girl panties on and went for it.
Now, I hadn’t planned out this route. I figured I’d just keep walking/running until I hit 12 miles. Thankfully, the entire loop ended up putting me back in the parking lot right at the 12 mile mark. Had I been wrong and needed to walk another mile or two to get back to the car, I think I would have cried. Ok, not literally but those last two miles were tough enough as it was.
I was afraid I was lost when Branch Crossing just kept on going and Research Forest was no where in site. At that point, I figured I’d keep trekking and break out the map as I got closer. About mile 8 I ran into two youngery guys. The one boy (they had to be 16-17) was doing something with his backpack while his friend was waiting. His friend says “Hey Mama…out here workin’ huh? Keep going…don’t stop!” and gave me a high five. I smiled and told him I still had 4 miles to go to which he responded “That’s what I’m talking about. Waddle on!” Now, he either said “Water on” or “Waddle on”. It’s possible I’ve been reading too much John Bingham, but I’m pretty sure he said waddle! I laughed a bit to myself and kept on going.
I breathed a sigh of relief as Branch Crossing turned into Research Forest. I was no longer lost! Once I hit my parking lot, I went into CVS and got me a new bottle of water (drank all mine by mile 10) and a Gatorade. Too bad they don’t have hydration stations for training runs! With my electrolytes replenished, I headed home to sit in an ice bath. While I hate taking them, I do think they help a great deal…the next day. I don’t see much of a difference right after my ice bath, but I’m pretty sure I would be more sore the next day if I didn’t take them. So, I’ll freeze my tush off for 10 minutes to be able to walk like a normal person!
The weather was beautiful. It was about 88 when I got back to my car. Of course, I was still sweating but not nearly as bad as when it was in the mid to high 90’s. It appears I had a lot of salt to sweat out too!
So…how about the cadence? Well, it wasn’t so good. I skipped 2 of my intervals, but in the grand scheme of things I don’t think that matters too much.
My fastest cadence was 88, which was pretty good, but as you can tell it wasn’t long lasting! Saturday evening I went to a Stock the Bar party for my CrossFit trainer. I was talking to Robin, one of the girls I see coming and going but haven’t been able to workout with, about my training. She runs 1/2’s twice a year and said she had trained for a full marathon but once she hit the 14 mile run she decided she was a 1/2 girl and dropped out of the full. I told her I was tempted to drop down to the 1/2 because I know I can do that, but this weekend coming up is my 14 miler so we’ll see how it goes at that point!
