Smell of Leather and Sweat

It was another AMRAP day.

WOD:

20 Minute AMRAP

5 Parallette Push Ups

10 Toes to Bar (Knees to Elbows)

15 Med Ball Cleans (12#)

Completed 8 and 5 push ups

My goal was to complete 6 rounds but I made it a little past 8! Those cleans were tiring. Basically, that’s 30 squats. It was a good workout though. I left feeling good about my performance.

On another note, I bought some books today! I’ve been eyeing the leather books at Barnes & Noble for a while and decided to start adding them to my collection. Soooo…I started with Pride and Prejudice and Jane Eyre!

Aren’t they pretty?! The paper is nice and thick too. Well worth the money (which isn’t really all that much).

They look nice on my bookshelf. I’ll be adding more as time and money permit! Oh, and…I signed up for NaNoWriMo again this year. I know I said I probably wouldn’t do it again, but it’s been 2 years so it may not be so bad! Plus, it will push me to get my rough draft finished of The Blue Onion.

Anyone else doing NaNoWriMo?

Dry Lakes and Dry Feet

It has been many years since Texas has experienced a drought like the one we’ve dealt with this year. Supposedly, these types of conditions could go on for another 1-3 years. Let’s hope the “professionals” are wrong in this instance. Lake Conroe is the lowest I’ve ever seen it. The north side of the 1097 bridge is completely dry with grass growing. Water normally fills this up all the way to the treeline.

The south side of the bridge shows a lot of land/sand as well. These people had lake front homes with FEET of water….now, they could be considered beach homes!

It’s all quite sad. I do hope we get a lot of rain this fall. We need at least 20″+. Anyone have some they care to send this way?

Wednesday I forgot my Garmin so I didn’t have anything to tell me when my intervals were up and I didn’t plan on watching the clock on my phone that closely. So, I decided to change up my running a bit and ran the whole mile. Forget the intervals…I’m going all.the.way baby!

Ok, so it wasn’t all that pretty! Yes, my pace wavered quite a bit. I started off strong but the end was tough. About half way through I wanted to stop, but forced myself to keep going. In fact, I noticed my shoe came untied a bit before that and I refused to stop and tie it because I knew I wouldn’t start again. So, while it may not be pretty, it’s actually not terribly bad!

Yesterday, was another CrossFit day. We did some skill work then tried to decide how to do the WOD. The day before they had done a 15 minute AMRAP. Thursday was supposed to be a 20 minute AMRAP. Shane wanted us to just do 8 rounds instead of an AMRAP but I wasn’t sure if I could get 8 rounds in. So, we settled for 8 rounds with a cut off of 20 minutes.

Skill:

Squat Clean

WOD:

8 Rounds or 20 Minutes, whichever was first.

In case you can’t read that, it’s:

5 Sumo Deadlift High Pulls (65#)

10 Ring Dips (Green band)

20 Wall Balls (16#, dropped to 12#)

I did ok. The ring dips and wall balls were quite tough and I’m not sure why. I started with a 16# med ball, which wasn’t too bad last time, but had to drop down to a 12# after round 2. I guess 20 in a row was just too much. The dips were hard to do too. They got more pathetic as the workout went on! All in all I finished with 7 rounds and only 7 wall balls left in my 8th round. I was so close! Something that I’m noticing during my workouts is I’m not pushing past the threshold. I should be pushing harder rather than stopping to catch my breath. That’s something I’ll work on from here on out. If I’m going to do this marathon, I will need to learn how to push through the mental hurdles and pain to finish.

Today is a rest day but tomorrow brings on a 12 miler! Not sure how this is going to go, but we’ll see. My foot seems to be feeling better, so I’m glad of that. Oh, guess what came in today!! I finally have multiple pairs of Drymax socks! Anyone who has been following this blog for a bit knows how much trouble I’ve had with blisters. It’s not been pretty. I thought it may have been the way I was walking, but come to find out it was just because my feet sweat so much (I know…ew).

I had tried Thorlo’s before but I still got blisters in them. These are the only pair of socks I’ve used that have helped me stave off those little buggers. From now on, I’m only using Drymax socks for running/walking.

This whole time I’ve been worried that I couldn’t do the marathon because my feet would be covered in blisters, but now I only have to worry about whether I can go that far or not! On that note…I leave you with this:

It’s Official…

My coach is trying to kill me. If he isn’t, then I don’t know what the heck made him come up with today’s workout. First of all, I should have listened to my body when it didn’t want to work out and just went home and vegged on the couch! In fact, Shane even said I picked a bad day to come in.

Skill:
L-Sit Holds
Rd 1 – 16 Secs, Rd 2 – 27 Secs, Rd 3 – 18 Secs
Yeah, I have no strength to hold these things!

WOD:
3 Rounds
200 Meter Run
20 Pull Ups (Green Band)
200 Meter Run
20 Push Press (65#)
200 Meter Run
20 GHD Sit Ups
200 Meter Run
20 Box Jumps (Modified to Step Ups)
Finished in 38:10 (Cut off was 40 mins)

My foot started hurting during the 3rd round. I modified the box jumps with step ups just so I didn’t do too much to my foot. The runs went ok but I could feel my foot during the last few. Sunny ran my last two 200 Meter runs with me. I did appreciate her support but at the same time it makes me feel sssllllowww!

The pull ups went ok for the first 30 but I had a hard time getting my chin up on the last 30. I did ok, but not nearly what I was hoping for. Since I got there a little early, I tried to do some pull ups with the blue band. I think I can do about 5 but any more than that and I’ll need the green band.

The push presses got tough quick. I got the first 20 done in sets of 10, but the last two rounds I had to do 5 and rest. In fact, on the last round I had 2 that I had to re-do because I didn’t lock it out at the top. That was a bit irritating!

The sit ups and step ups were tiring but not hard. They were a nice break from the pull ups and push presses. If I did the box jumps though I probably would have been dieing.

This evening I iced my foot again. I’m hoping it’ll heal up pretty soon so I don’t have to keep babying it. This weekend is my 12 mile training run since I only did 6 miles last weekend. Last weekend was supposed to have been the 12 miler, but my foot started hurting me again around mile 2.5. I’m hoping my foot is much better for this weekend. After my 10 mile race I was hobbling around like an old woman, so we’ll see how I do after 12 miles! hahaha. I’m estimating it will take me about 3:15 to do the 12 miles, so we’ll see how it goes!

What are your plans this weekend?

CrossFit Total

This was the first time in quite a while that I felt so defeated after CrossFit. We did CrossFit Total to get a gauge of where we are with the heavy lifting. I PR’d on one lift and only by 5#s…pa.the.tic.

My PR for Back Squat was 175#. I only managed to get 165# this time. I know my legs and arms were sore from yesterday’s workout, but still…. The Strict Press was the only one I moved up on. My previous PR was 75# and I was able to get to 80# today. However, it took me a few tries. I think I was psyching myself out a bit on it. The weight didn’t feel that heavy on my shoulders but as soon as I tried to start pressing it felt like it weighed a ton!

Ahhh…the Deadlifts. My PR on Deadlift is 235#. Today…I was only able to get to 215#. WTH? 20# less? Shoot, just a couple of weeks ago I did 215# for 3 reps…I should have easily been able to go up from there. Alas…I couldn’t even budge 235# off the ground. I had all sorts of emotions running at that point. I was embarrassed because I was expecting a good lift, Shane was expecting a good lift. I was pissed because I couldn’t do it and it had been months since my last PR. There was no reason I shouldn’t have done better. Shane kept saying “It’s ok…I bet if you come back in two days you’d be able to do it no problem. You’ve been doing a lot of running lately.” Which is true but it still bothers me.

My foot was hurting a bit after all of the lifts too. I’m supposed to get 12 miles in this weekend but I think I’m going to drop that down to 6 and do my 12 miles the next week (just flip the distances around). That should allow my foot a little bit of a rest.

On our way home Mike was hungry so we stopped at Subway to pick up a sandwich. That’s when I saw this:

Oh my goodness….did those smell great! The state I was in, I was more than happy to do some emotional eating and take a few dozen of those off their hands. Thankfully, I thought better of it and passed on the cookies. Let’s hope Saturday’s run goes better.

Cindy and Race Recap by Photo

WOD:
Cindy
AMRAP 20 Mins
5 Pull Ups (Green Band)
10 Push Ups (Competition Style)
15 Squats (To Med Ball)
Finished 10.6 Rounds

Last time we did Cindy we had deadlifts every 3 minutes and I finished 8 rounds. So…I’m not so sure this is an improvement. We also did kettlebell swings instead of pull ups at that time because the class was so large. However, I will take 10 rounds!

I got an email today saying my race photos were ready. I’m always nervous to look at the photos because they never seem to turn out very well. Typically, this is because I’m pooped and forget to smile when I see the camera. Well, these weren’t too shabby!

The race begins:

The big “hill” (aka…bridge) between mile 9 and 10. If you look closely, you’ll see Clara in blue behind me:

And finally…heading for the finish line. Look at that concentration! hahaha:
