New Home For Grandma

Yesterday my Mother, Aunt and I went to visit my Grandmother at the nursing home she’s currently staying at. The home isn’t the worst I’ve seen, but it is still a depressing place to go. Their nurses are contract workers so you hardly ever see the same person twice. Grandma was feeling a little down in the dumps and she was looking a bit worse than the last time I saw her as well. Needless to say, by the time we left I was feeling quite blue.

My Aunt had printed out a couple of homes to go look at to see if they would be a better place for Grandma or not. We stopped at the first one, Villa Toscana, and our hearts melted. What a wonderful place this was! When you walked in it was very quiet and CLEAN. There wasn’t the normal smell that accompanies many nursing homes. The director took us on a tour of the facility. The dining room was to die for! This place looked like a hotel.

They have a chef, not a cook, that fixes all of the meals. The menu was mouth watering! They had a coffee bar with all sorts of fruit juices, fruits, snacks…yummm. Then as you walk a little further down they have an ice cream parlor!

They can get whatever ice cream they want with toppings. Sprinkles…nuts…chocolate…strawberries…mmmmm…. They also have a salon where they can get their hair cut, nails done, and pedicures. There’s also a separate room you can reserve for parties. Absolutely gorgeous place. The library was also nice and soothing.

There’s also a gazebo outside in the middle of the yard where you can sit and watch the birds eat from the feeders. I have no doubt in my mind that my Grandmother would love this place. Today my Aunt is in the process of getting the paperwork through so she can move in. Not only will Grandma enjoy the climate, but I think it will encourage more people to go visit her because it’s not as depressing as the other.

Life’s Detours

It’s a very simple concept; people are born, grow, and eventually pass away. There is no way to stop the process, but plenty of ways to speed it up. Back in March my Grandmother had a series of silent strokes that put her into the hospital. She had some brain damage that resulted in her not being able to walk on her own (she didn’t walk by herself very well to begin with) and some problems with her short term memory.

After the hospital made sure she was out of harm’s way, they sent her to a physical therapy hospital where they worked with her on her walking and other motor skills. She was doing very well, and they even thought she was going to get to go home to live with my Aunt. Grandma was able to walk to and from her wheelchair. She was doing pretty good with her memory as well, although she still had some problems. Unfortunately, about two weeks ago she fell when she tried to get out of her bed to go to the bathroom.

The hospital staff picked her up and helped her out. Well, the next day the same thing happened. She also started getting more confused and antsy again. With this new development they sent her to a long term critical care hospital. Grandma is back to not being able to walk and is still confused on a normal basis. She knows who everyone is, but she just has a hard time remembering anything clearly that took place in the past 5 years or so. She is quite weak and isn’t eating much. A scan showed that she was having problems with her aortic valve. The valve is not functioning properly so the blood is not being pushed through her system like it should be. This is what caused her to fall. Her blood pressure got too low and she passed out. Now, the Cardiologist says that the valve needs to be replaced. Grandma is refusing to do the surgery and I can’t say I blame her. She is almost 82 years old and going through open heart surgery is a scary prospect.

So, at this time we are just spending the time we can with her and letting her know she is surrounded by love. I have many happy memories with her and will hopefully be able to add a few more before it is her time to continue her journey elsewhere.

I Just Want to Sleep!

Just a funny little update, Mike normally gets up at 4 AM and lets the dogs outside to go to the bathroom while he goes and runs. I sleep in until 5 AM then get up and get ready for work. On any given day the dogs are both very quick to get up so they can go outside. This morning Ruby was extra tired and not ready to get out of bed.

I pushed her with my foot, but she didn’t move. Mike tried to get her to go outside, but she wouldn’t move. Mike had to physically pick her up (she’s 50 pounds) and carry her out of the room! She takes after her mother! lol

A New Year

The new year is here and ready to take off. How did you spend your New Year’s Eve? We didn’t do anything special. The night started off with taking down the Christmas decorations.

Here’s our tree without all of the lights (pain in the tush to take off). Can you see how it’s leaning?! We had to struggle with the lights to get them off and I think in the progress we made it off kilter.

The next step was to sweep up all of the needles we ripped off. You can see some of the Ruby hair that was swept up as well..ew.

Mike took the tree out to the porch (where it’s still sitting). The living room looked a little bigger with the tree gone, but a little less happy. However, the smell of the fir was still lingering, which made me happy!

Once that was done, we started watching the Twilight Zone Marathon. It’s become somewhat of a tradition. Every New Year’s Eve we watch part, if not most, of the Twilight Zone episodes (black and white ones). Mom had left some Asti behind from the last time they were here, so we drank it. It was actually quite good. Finally about 10:30 we decided to go to bed.

We’re watching Jackie’s dog, Rita, who hates loud noises. So, I doped her up with some puppy prozac and crawled into bed. The firecrackers started around 10. I turned up my noise maker, hoping to drowned out the gun shots that were sure to come. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to. I’m not sure who was shooting but it was someone close by because it was quite loud. Rita started freaking out a bit. She crawled up on the bed and was trying to find a way to hide. I grabbed her off of Mike and stuck her under the blankets. Once she was in there she was fine. The shooting started about 11:30 and ended around 1:30. Then started again at 6:20. Now, I’m not quite sure what the joy in shooting a gun in the air is. To me, the enjoyment of shooting a gun is to see how accurate I am which means that you have a target you’re shooting at. At night, you can’t see squat. I can only assume they were shooting in the air, maybe they were shooting out…dunno…but it doesn’t look like much fun to me. Then again, I’m biased because I don’t like hearing all the shooting when I’m trying to sleep!

Rita got hot about 3, so she kept trying to dig out of the blankets. Once she found her way out she was panting in my face. Thanks Rita! Needless to say, I didn’t get much sleep. But, I knew I wouldn’t. I assume tonight will be the same thing. I’m going to try to find some earplugs tonight and see if that helps! I think our new tradition should be staying at a hotel on New Year’s Eve!

Last year wasn’t all that great. We lost some loved ones, lost some money, and possibly lost some of our sanity. I’m hoping 2010 will bring good things. I’m feeling good about how it has started.

I got to see my Grandmother, Aunt and Uncle today. I had my black eyed peas, so I’m destined to have good luck! My Aunt and I discussed starting my own company. So, I’m really excited about doing that!

I hope all of you have a great new year full of growth and prosperity!

Parental Visit

My parents were in town for a few days this week. They had gone on a cruise from Spain to Galveston, so I picked them up at the terminal and they stayed for 3 days. I wish they could have stayed longer, but it was nice seeing them regardless!

I can’t believe we only have 7 days until Christmas!! I love the holidays. It would be nice if Mom and Dad were here for Christmas this year, but I don’t think that will happen for quite a while. They’re spending Christmas in NC with the grandkids.
