I can’t believe how fast this year is going already!! It’s going way too fast for my liking, frankly. That being said, January was a pretty good month for me. So, let’s recap what happened for January Going the Distance.
I challenged myself to get 35 miles of running/walking and 8 training sessions. I was able to meet both of those! Of course, I wouldn’t have been able to get my mileage if it hadn’t been for the 13 miles on Saturday. I’ve been doing Robby’s Going the Distance Challenges since October and while I’ve enjoyed them, I’ve decided to take a break this month (yes, I will continue to workout consistently since I have a 1/2 marathon to train for still!) and do my own challenge. Thanks Robby for the great motivators and awesome spreadsheets!! For February, I’ve decided to try to become a more positive person. That means holding back biting comments and trying to find the good in the bad. I’m going to try to recruit my friends to help hold me to that by pointing out when I get grumpy/rude/negative. So, here’s to hoping it goes well!
What else happened in January? I finished my Paleo Challenge (I am still eating Paleo) and as a result lost 12lbs and 6.5 inches! I walked the furthest I’ve ever walked in my entire life…which was both good and bad. My feet are still angry with me! There were some small victories as well, but those are the big highlights.

I woke up this morning to a warm shower that kept getting cooler. Yep…you guessed it. It appears our hot water heater is having issues. Mike was able to get the pilot light lit again but it went right out. Then he tried to light it again a little while later and a fire ball came out. That was quite scary. Tomorrow morning will be started with a colllld shower. Yea! Can’t wait!
This afternoon was supposed to be a 40 minute walk/run day. I ended up wogging for 15 minutes, walked 5, wogged 15 more and finished it with a 5 minute walk. All in all, I was quite happy with how it went! This Sunday Mike wants to try to walk a 1/2 marathon, so I’ll get in as many miles as I can. I have several miles (14, I think) left to get in before the end of the month for January’s Going The Distance.
Next weekend Mike and I will be competing in the Bill Crews Remission Run in Conroe. I’m looking forward to it!
It’s a CrossFit day!! Today’s workout wasn’t too bad, except for the first run…that sucked.
Today’s Strength was Squat Thrusters 5 x 5. So, 5 rounds of 5 reps. We’re supposed to up the weight as we go. Michelle and I were paired up. We started with a 35# bar and ended with 55#s. That went pretty good. I need to work on keeping my elbows out so I create more of a shelf for the bar. The WOD started with a 200 meter sprint. Yep…sprint! Then 21-15-9 of pull ups and box jumps followed by another 200 meter run.
The sprint was tough…by the time I finished the run and crawled up on the box for my pull ups I thought I might get sick! I kept telling myself to breathe and it’ll go away. I did jumping pull ups since I can’t do a real pull up. However, I felt like my pull was going much better than it had been. Shane made me put a 25# weight on top of my normal step up box so it added about 1 1/2 to 2 more inches. That little bit made quite a difference. That sprint seemed to make everything else that much harder. It was tough to catch my breath. Shane said we should be able to finish the WOD within 10-12 minutes, which normally means 16-18 minutes for us! I ended up finishing in 10:04!! My last run was quite sad…not much of a run.
Michelle tried to get me to try the box jumps today with the small box but I couldn’t do it. Like she said, it’s completely psychological. In my head I see myself hitting the box with my toes and falling face first instead of landing on the box. I need to get over that and just do it. Maybe I should make my own box and try it at home. I tried to do some jumping when I got home on an imaginary box, but I think I would have tripped over it too! It seemed like I’m not getting my knees high enough. I’ll keep practicing and I’ll do it eventually. I also want to try to do a pull up with the green band. I just want to be able to do one pull up that’s not a jumping pull up!
This morning I went with my husband to get a painting framed at Aaron Brothers. After spending more money than I cared for on this particular painting (but, it’s his thing…so more power to him) we walked around the Woodlands Town Market area for a little bit. The weather was still a bit cool, but the sky was clear and bright blue. It was a beautiful day! After going to Luke’s Locker and Sur la Table we were going to get some breakfast, but nothing was open yet. I was fine with that since I had already eaten some cherries and nuts for breakfast. We said goodbye and Mike went to his parents’ while I went to Tamarac Park. It had been over a week since I’ve done any walking/running. I just got out of my routine and became a little lazy.
By the time I got to the park it had warmed up enough not to wear my jacket. I think it was about 50 Degrees. There weren’t nearly the number of people I had been seeing at the park lately. Could it be people already giving up on New Year’s Resolutions? I decided to do things a little differently today though. In the past I had been alternating walking for 4 minutes and running for 1. This time I decided on focusing on walking fast without running. I shortened my stride and really tried to move my feet as quickly as I could. Yes….I’m pretty sure I looked like one of those power walkers except I didn’t shake my hips! I also found if I did a wog (not quite a walk and not quite a jog) I could go for longer than a minute without getting too out of breath. I ended up finishing 3.69 miles in 54:50. So, while it wasn’t a great improvement, I do believe it was faster than what I had been doing. I think I was tiring myself out on my runs which then made my walk slower. I’ll try this strategy again over this next week to see if I want to change my race strategy or go back to the walk/running plan.
After my walk, I went to James Avery to pick up my bracelet and made a pit stop at Best Buy. I am getting tired of holding my phone while I do my route because I always forget my running pocket (think fanny pack but smaller). So, I had decided to get an Ipod Shuffle since it has the clip on it and is quite small. However….I walked out with this:
I can hear people now…”Tammy and her gadgets”! My Brother and Sister-in-Law had given me a Best Buy gift card at Christmas that I had been saving for who knows what. I spent a while looking at the nano vs the shuffle and decided I’d rather have a screen. With the shuffle you can’t see which playlists you want to choose. I think they have a voice command thing where it talks to you, but it would just seem faster to be able to see it. Plus, instead of 2 gig the nano has 8 gig (or 16 if you choose). Once I got home I filled it up with music and I’m looking forward to using it on my next walk.

We started the night off with as many burpees as we could do in a 20 second time limit, rest for 10 seconds and repeat 3 times. Then we did OH squats where we were supposed to up the weight after each round. We did 3 reps for 5 rounds. I misunderstood and did the same weight for the first 4 rounds, then added 10 lbs (total of 45#) to the last round. Which, I’m embarrassed to say was probably the most I would be able to do but I would have liked to have tried. My partner wasn’t really a partner so I didn’t have a spotter anyway.
The WOD was 5 rounds of 40 sole to sole sit ups and 20 push presses. I started off ok on the sit ups. I was able to touch the wall each time. Then, I thought I could do 45#s on the push presses, but after I got about 4-5 into my 20 when I realized that I was not going to be able to do that much for 5 rounds. So, Shane got the 35# bar for me. I was very slow….in fact after the first round of sit ups my abs were trashed and I could only do crunches. I was struggling to get through my last round of push presses (I had done 12) when Shane said I could drop down to the PVC if we needed to. I told him we’d see. I had already down graded from a 45# bar to a 35# bar so I was not going to go down to the PVC!! I got it done in 19:58. Right now, my arms are trashed. I can barely lift them up to fix my hair!!
