Linville Falls, Jonas Ridge, North Carolina

Tucked away in Jonas Ridge, North Carolina (not far from Linville) are the Linville Falls. Our original destination was Table Rock Mountain, but we missed our turn off and found this little beauty! There appears to be two parking lots. We parked in the top parking lot but it appears the lower parking area was more popular; However, I didn’t see any signs for the lower lot off of 183. It may only be accessible off of 221.

 

The trek from the upper parking area to the first viewing area was about .5 miles and had some steep areas. While the perspective is hard to see, I assure you it was quite a steep hike back up!

 

 

The leaves could be a little slick in some areas on the walk down, so use some caution on the trail.

 

 

The first viewing area is the closest the smaller falls and has a nice area to sit and relax or have a quick lunch, if time permits.

 

 

 

The water then flows around the sitting area and disappears through the rock formations to form the larger water fall visible from the other two viewing areas.

 

 

 

The forest was lush and more green than I had anticipated it would be in early November. During the summer it must be even more beautiful. The tree trunks and roots had to find ways to grow through all of the surrounding rocks which lead to some interesting formations!

 

 

 

The Chimney View was about another .5 mile from the first falls. There were a few steep areas here as well but also some stairs that helped with navigation. The look out spot isn’t as large as the first, but still a nice place to catch your breath. The falls from this view are created from the water that wound its way through the rock formations in the first viewing area as well as the smaller falls a little further back.

 

 

 

There is one more trail that leads to Erwin’s View (only about 800 meters from the Chimney View). This particular spot seemed to be the more popular “hang out” and was a bit crowded. While this wasn’t a planned stop, it was worth the time. Since the overall hike is probably close to 2.5 miles round trip, it can be a relatively quick excursion or can be a nice relaxing afternoon walk!

 

 

Mom for a Week

This past week I went to North Carolina to babysit my nephews (11 and 6) while my parents were on a 14 day cruise and my brother had to work. I was a little nervous, but I have to say it went really well! Be assured…I did NOT just sit around eating bon-bons, as Mike would say.

 

 

Now, in all fairness 10 of those miles was on Saturday after I got home but 18 miles isn’t too bad! Just a quick breakdown:

 

Monday: Arboretum walk of about 6-7 miles (watch stopped working)

Tuesday: Hike around Table Rock Mountain and Linville Falls about 4 miles

Thursday: 8 miles on a stationary bike

 

I have quite a few pictures to share for Monday and Tuesday’s workout so I’ll have to do those in a different post. In the meantime, I can share some photos of my week at a glance!

 

Mike and I left Friday afternoon and headed toward my “vacation house” haha!

 

 

We reached our destination Saturday evening about 5PM. Since Daylight Saving Time hit Sunday morning, we didn’t really have to adjust to the Eastern Time Zone. Once we were home, however, was another story! Sunday the boys and I played with their toys then headed to the mall so Mike could watch football. Dakota is the oldest and Logan is the one looking on longingly at the plane.

 

 

Monday, I got up at 5:45 (so much for sleeping in!) and made sure the boys were up, fed, and at the bus stop on time. Once they were gone, Mike and I grabbed our workout gear and headed to the arboretum for what should have been an 8 mile walk.  We looked around at the bonsai plants before hitting the trails.

 

 

I have to say, the bonsai exhibit makes me want to try to make one! The trail took us to Lake Powhatan. Since my watch broke I didn’t get an exact distance, but I think we only ended up going 6-7 miles (if I added the mileage right from all the signs).

 

 

We got home in time to get the kiddos from the bus stop and eat dinner. Day 1 down! Tuesday through Thursday the morning routine was always the same. Since my brother, Eddie, was off on Tuesday he was there to get them from the bus stop so Mike and I could go out to Table Rock Mountain. Since we missed the turn off, we ended up going to Linville Falls first, then found the turn for Table Rock on our way home.

 

 

Wednesday we went to Black Mountain to look around at the shops. I picked up another Carruth sculpture for my hallway! I love his sour face.

 

 

Thursday I rode the stationary bike while Mike ran his 4 miles on the treadmill. It was nice to get in a different type of workout than running/walking and weight training. Since it was our last day in Asheville, we decided to go downtown and walk around a bit. There were some gorgeous fall colors!

 

 

 

We looked at all of the art deco architecture and enjoyed some time at the Grove Arcade (the mall/apartment downtown).

 

 

Eddie was off on Friday, so we left Thursday night to ensure plenty of time to get home and pick the dogs up. Apparently, when the dogs are in the kennel they don’t sleep well. Ruby was passed out when she got home!

 

 

 

All in all, I enjoyed my time as a Mom for a week. That being said, a week was enough! I do miss the boys and can’t wait to see them again next year.

Vacation WODs and Grace

Heidi Ho Good People!

I’m sorry to have disappeared for a week. Last week I spent in a beach house overlooking Holden Beach, NC. It was a much needed break. I did do a couple of benchmark WODs while I was there.

Monday 7/25
200 Squats
Finished in 5:50

Yeah….I was sore for 3 days afterword. While I didn’t have a medicine ball to squat to, I think I did pretty good. I wanted a workout I could do in my room so I didn’t have my family staring at me!

This one went pretty good. It would have been nice to have an abmat to get more extension. I did these in the living room beside the couch. Every time I sat up I could see my nephews playing on the couch. They didn’t notice me at first but once they did they started making faces every time I popped back up. It was a little distracting but funny. We had also just eaten pulled pork sandwiches for dinner. It’s definitely not a good idea to do that many sit ups after eating. Unfortunately, I got rug burn on my tush from doing so many. That was a little painful for a few days as well. So, not only was I walking funny from the squats but sitting was a little painful at times!

I took the rest of the week off. The gym was going to be closed on Thursday anyway, so I wouldn’t have done the workout if I had been home! lol. I spent the rest of the week reading and relaxing. My brother, sis-in-law, nephews and I all went to play putt-putt on Monday. Then Mom, Dad and I went to Southport and walked around for an hour or so on Tuesday. Other than that we didn’t leave the house.

I got home late Sunday night. That was my last “bad” meal. I ate like a pig all week long. Ok, maybe not a pig as they may have shown more restraint! Monday started me back to making healthier choices. Mike is doing this with me this time, so that will help. Plus, it makes me happy to see him wanting to eat healthier. He’s not out of shape, in fact he runs 4+ miles every day except Sat and Sun, but he eats a bunch of processed crap. Glad to see him working on that. He had a bit of a weekend with his Father (who has had a stroke and has dementia and expressive aphasia as a result) and Mother, so I think that’s what spurred this.

Weigh In: 206#
Ok…confession time. I was 204# before going on vacation, so while I’m glad I only gained 2# while on vacation I am not pleased that I am 10# up from my lowest weigh in so far. Today’s eating went very well. I didn’t have any artificial sweetners either, so I’m going to try to keep them out of my diet. Afterall, they cause a spike in insulin as well, which causes weight gain (or at least causes you to hold on to the weight).

Strength:
OH Squats 3 (45#)x 3(65#) x 3(75#) x 3(didn’t get to it)
I was partnered up with Tiffany for this exercise and I have to say I was a little frustrated with the outcome. We started with the bar and went up from there. I was only able to get 3 rounds in because Tiffany was struggling to get the bar overhead for her 3rd round. Everyone else was putting their weights up by the time she gave up. She could do it, she just psyched herself out. She kept trying to press the bar up…yeah, that isn’t going to work! Although, I think she could have done it (had 65# originally then dropped her down to 60#) she improved over her last attempt (45#). This time she ended up getting to 55#. I only got up to 75#, which was where I was last time. I’m pretty sure I could have done 80-85# this time. Oh well…next time!

While I went up 15# from my last Grace experience, my time also went up by a couple of minutes. I’m not too upset with that though. Today, I can really feel my back muscles. They aren’t sore…but I can tell they were worked out. That’s what happens when you haven’t touched a weight in over a week I guess! It was very tempting not to workout today, but I made myself go and I’m glad I did. We did these crossovers after the workout. Basically, there is a 25# weight on the floor, you get into push up formation on the right side of the plate and when the timer starts you walk your hands over the plate to the other side and back. We did those in Tabatas. I didn’t do that well (lowest number was 4). My wrist started bothering me a bit. It was probably because of poor form. I had a hard time keeping my butt down!

Our trainer and his girlfriend went to the CrossFit Games in LA this past weekend. He took that opportunity to propose and it was caught on film! So happy for the two of them!

Poor Planning

I apologize for not having my post done for today. This past week I was on vacation and didn’t get back in until late last night. Unfortunately, I didn’t have a post ready to go for Monday because I thought I’d have plenty of time. HAHAHA…right.

This past week my family and I went to Holden Beach, NC for some sandy fun.

The weather was in the high 80’s for the most part (hit 90+ only twice) and windy. The wind kept things feeling much cooler. My favorite spot was the back patio that overlooked the ocean. I did a lot of reading:

and, last but definitely not least, I did a tone of eating! I celebrated my Dad’s birthday as well as my Hubster’s even though he wasn’t there!

Had a great time, now it’s back to the real world!
