7 Year Itch

Mike and I will be married 7 years tomorrow, 1/31/11. As I’ve mentioned, we have signed up for Angie’s Half Crazy 1/2 Marathon on March 27th. Mike decided he wanted to try to run a 1/2 marathon today to see if he could do it. Yep…you heard that right. He doesn’t believe in “training” for a race, so he wanted to do a dry run first. In all fairness, he runs 4 miles every morning Monday-Friday so he’s in pretty good shape. We decided to call this the 7 Year Itch 1/2 Marathon since it’s right before the big day! Thankfully, neither one of us have the “itch”. Before I started I put Body Glide all over my feet since I typically get blisters pretty bad. Today I was scheduled to go 7 miles for my 1/2 marathon training. Originally, I was going to stop at 7 miles (since Mike is about twice s fast as me, that would put us finishing about the same time) however, I decided if he was going to do it, I was going to do it.


I did the wogging thing again instead of interval running/walking. I went about a mile for each wogging ¬†time so I was happy with that. At some point I got tired and was walking faster than I was jogging so I stuck with just walking the rest. The first 8 miles weren’t too bad. I could feel a blister forming on the ball of both feet but it didn’t seem too bad. Mike passed me a few times on our track…no surprise there! Once I hit the 8 mile mark, I started going downhill quickly. I met back up with Mike (who finished his run in about 2:20 and actually probably ran closer to 15 miles since he goofed up one of his loops) about that time and he walked the rest of it with me. That was a big help. At this point, I was tired and wishing I had some music. I didn’t bring my nano because it was threatening to rain and I didn’t want to mess it up. I was hurting pretty good for the last 4 miles. The blisters were screaming and my legs were starting to really get tired. While I tried to increase my pace, I wasn’t successful. In fact, the difference between my starting pace and my ending pace is outrageous. Needless to say, I’m glad I have 2 more months to continue training for the next one.



As you can see from my splits, I started struggling at mile 9 and just went downhill from there. My average was ok, not great. However, my doctor told me I’d probably only be able to do 3-5 miles when exercising because of my Tracheal Stenosis so I’m thrilled to prove him wrong! I am able to do most everything I want, and that means a lot to me. So…let’s see how this breaks down with the charts!



See what I mean? I crashed and burned from mile 1 to mile 13! Oh well…this is a preliminary run so we’ll see what happens at the 1/2 marathon at the end of March!


What did you do today?


I am so sore today. This is the most sore I’ve been after a CrossFit workout since I think my first or second week. I blame it on the kettlebell swings! My arms are killing me. My knuckle on my left hand was bothering me too and I couldn’t figure out what I had done. Well, come to find out I had bruised it. In fact, I had three bruises on that part of my hand from hitting the dumbbell. I know I hit the dumbbell against my leg a couple of times so I think that caused it. What can I say…I’m a wuss!

As most of you know, I’ve been having to take my showers/baths like this for the past two days.

Thankfully, we almost have our new hot water heater in place. The company we called to come out and fix it said it was irreparable and they’d be happy to replace it for us for $1509.00. That was awfully sweet of them, but I declined the offer. Mike has been working all morning on installing the new on. Yesterday it took both of us to get it out of the truck, get the old one down and replace it with the new one. Now, all that stands between me and a hot shower is a pipe for the hot water. The other one was stripped which caused Mike to make his 3rd run to Lowe’s. We live about 30-40 minutes from it. I am so excited to have it back up and running again! Ruby, on the other hand, was not impressed with our home repair skills.

Get Your Motor Running

Wednesday was a running/walking day. I turned the TV on “The Sing Off” and watched while I got my miles in. I ran for a few 3 minute spells, then walked the rest. All in all, I got in about 5.5 miles. I was tired afterward, but felt alright. My official 1/2 marathon training starts on Monday!! I’m both nervous and excited about the race. My brain was telling me, if I can put up with the pain of CrossFit then I can walk 13 miles. While I still think I can walk 13 miles without any trouble, part of my brain is telling me I’ve bitten off more than I can chew. So, I’m trying to push that thought down to the basement and get going! I’ve also decided I’m going to do a walk/run schedule instead of just walking all of it. I may not be able to do the entire 13 miles as a walk/run, but I’m going to try.


Yesterday was another CrossFit day. We had several new people there (all of whom did great!). Since there were so many of us our WOD changed from front squats and ring rows to Tabatas. In case you’re not sure what a Tabata is, it’s where you go all out for 20 seconds giving everything you have, then you rest for 10 seconds and repeat. Our WOD consisted of 8 Tabata rounds of Ring Rows (pull ups for those who can do them), Wall Balls, Ball Slams, Burpees, and Squats. My arms were quite tired by the time we finished the Ring Rows that my throwing was a bit sad on the wall balls. I rather enjoyed the ball slams, but in retrospect I don’t know that I was getting my arms up high enough. I was concentrating on getting my squat in as I slammed down and didn’t pay much attention to where my arms were. Then came the dreaded burpees. OMG….they killed me. I can’t just fall down and bounce back up like a lot of them can, so I was rather slow to get down and up. In fact, after 4 rounds I think I only got 2 in for the last 4 rounds. There were a couple of times I was thinking “I’m just going to lay here”, but I had to make myself get back up and get ready to go again. I couldn’t jump my feet back up under me so I got on my knees and got up…probably should have tried to walk my feet in instead because I bruised my knees up pretty good. And…it was a good thing I was wearing long pants or I think I’d have skinned them as well.



Needless to say, I need to work on my core so I can jump my legs back and forth without having to get on my knees. Shane didn’t say one word to me on how horribly I was doing them. More than likely he was just glad I was still moving. Then we moved on to the squats. There was no weight, just as many as you could do. I felt pretty good but I was tired so I know my form was a bit off. This was the last round of tabatas so I was trying my best to make sure I wasn’t “bowing” (bending my torso too far forward). The burpees really zapped me and made me somewhat nauseous so I took a spot close to the door hoping for a breeze to come through. At one point I heard Shane say my name, but I was too far into my own world that I didn’t hear what he said. Hopefully it wasn’t anything that needed correcting because otherwise I just ignored him (not intentionally).


Once we were completely finished, I grabbed my water and had to get outside where it was cooler. Mike was waiting in the car, so I walked over and stood with the door open for a bit. He started chuckling because I looked like I’d just been run over…which I felt like at the time! We got home and had Lemon Thyme Chicken. I only had the 1 chicken breast and I was full. I find that I get full very quickly after my CrossFit days. Maybe it’s just from being tired? Not sure. But, I’m normally hungry in the morning!


Today I’m a little sore on my arms. When I first started going to CrossFit I would get extremely sore. In fact, I stayed sore for at least a week solid! I had to hold on to the wall to help myself sit down. It was quite sad. Now, I get sore but it’s the kind of sore where when you move that muscle you know it’s been worked out but you’re not groaning! So, I will take that as a sign that I’m improving!


PS…I really want to weigh myself to see if I’ve lost anything. I think the flab next to my knees is getting smaller and I’ve changed my diet so surely I’ve lost something. But I made a deal with myself that I would not weigh myself but once a month for now.

Friday Weight Fiasco and Reflections

First, Happy Friday All!!!

Second, ugh and ouch.

Yesterday, just because I hadn’t weighed myself in a while (I normally weigh 3 or 4 times a week) I decided to step on the scale. It said I was at 212.2 pounds. WHAT? So, I stepped off and back on. I did this about 3 times and the scale read the same thing. Now, last Friday I weighed in at 224.4. So, I was completely surprised by a 12lb loss. However, I decided not to think too much of it and weigh in again this morning when I’m supposed to be weighing in. I was quite excited to tell you the truth. I just knew I was going to be down, the question was down by how much! All of my calories have been spot on or below my goal of 1800 and I’ve burned 2400-2500 a day.

I drug my butt across my room (this is where the ouch comes into play…talk about sore!) and stepped on the scale…..and….226. No, that can’t be right, so I step on it 5 more times. My husband comes into the bathroom to which I promptly say “Step on the scale.” His weight shows 159.8…which is pretty much what he normally weighs. At this point I’m devastated. I thought for sure I was going to get a loss and I was supposedly down so much yesterday. What happened? I didn’t eat a lot of salt yesterday and I got my butt handed to me in Crossfit again where I was sweating. I also drank more water than I normally do (101.4 oz). Mike gave me a hug and said “Try not to get discouraged. You’re doing everything right. It’ll be ok.” It’s very hard not to get discouraged, but he’s right. I just have to believe that my body is undergoing some changes right now and the scale will go down eventually.

Yesterday’s Crossfit was tough, especially since my quads were still screaming from the workout on Tuesday. The WOD (or WorkOut of the Day) started with some stretching and a light run. Then we started our rounds for time. You had to do 15 back squats (where you have the barbell on your back) and then 10 ring rows (for those of us not strong enough to do pull ups yet!) and repeat that 10 times. I knocked out the first three rounds quite quick…then I hit a speed bump. I finished in 17:03, which is not great but it’s ok! Shane (our Trainer) was very supportive and helpful and once I heard him say “1 more and you’re done” I was so excited. I finished my last one and chugged some water. I was sweating pretty good. Then, Shane says “Ok, grab a bar”. uuuhhhh…what? I thought we were done!

We had to do 5 rounds of 10 leg lifts (not really sure what these are called. You lay on your back and pull your legs up to the bar, then back down, then back up…you get the point) and 10 sit ups. The first round of sit ups I was able to go all the way up to the wall. The second round I just couldn’t make my abs work. I still got crunches in, but it’s not the same. All in all, we did 150 back squats, 100 ring rows, 50 leg lifts and 50 sit ups. And…I’m feeling every one of those today!

On their board last night they had something along the lines of “90% of all Americans won’t take the pain to get fit. Are you in that 10%? If you’re here, you are.” While Crossfit really kicks my butt and makes me feel wholly inadequate at times, it also makes me feel stronger and have more confidence in myself. I’m doing things I didn’t think I’d ever do before. 150 squats?! Even though they were slow…they were mine!

Sugarlog Day 5 and NovGTD

My sugar cravings are getting much better. I didn’t give in the other day to the sugarbeast! So, on that front I’m feeling pretty confident.

Today for lunch, I ate boneless wings. Not great…987 calories and a ton of salt. However, I was only over my daily calorie count by 100 which isn’t too bad considering.

Today was also my first week to post my mileage for November: Going the Distance. I got 15 miles in on the treadmill! Woohoo! I’m on my way to my 60 miles goal. On another note, my friend Michelle invited me to join her and a couple of ladies from work to do Crossfit. We go on Monday to test it out. I’m a little concerned that I won’t necessarily make my 60 miles if I spend 3 days a week doing Crossfit, but I’ll be ok with that if I still give it my all.
